Heliopolis University was Established in 2009 with the aim to ioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to the students and the Egyptian community to improve well-being by decreasing threats to the Earth’systems through industrialization and consumption. Heliopolis University strives for conscious Sustainable Development, economic solidarity, social responsibility, and environmental balance in Egypt and the rest of the world. From the onset, Heliopolis University developed a sustainable campus practice through increased use of solar power, waste water treatment for irrigation, and conscious waste management and recycling. The degree programs offered at Heliopolis University address the concepts and theories of sustainable development through a multi-disciplinary holistic approach that integrates teaching, learning, research, and practice. The unique core program further enriches the learning experience by focusing on sustainability and human development.
Aswan University branch was established in 1974 affiliated to Assuit University and the study was begun in it in October 1973-1974 in the Faculty of Education. The first bachelor degree was granted in 1978. In 1995 a presidential decree no.23 for 1995 was issued to establish South Valley University, and then the university branch became affiliated to South Valley University.
In 2012, Aswan university was established as a dependence university according to the presidential decree no.311 in 11-6-2013. The university includes 15 faculties (faculty of Arts- faculty of Education-faculty of Social Work- faculty of Engineering- faculty of Energy Engineering- faculty of Veterinary Medicine- faculty of Agriculture- faculty of Nursing- faculty of Languages and Translation- faculty of Medicine- faculty of fishes and fisheries Technology- faculty of Commerce- faculty of Archaeology- faculty of Specific Education)”
The Green Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programme (GIEP) seeks to produce a new generation of social entrepreneurs who can positively contribute to the sustainable development of Egypt. This new MSc programme will enable prospective students to pursue multi-disciplinary studies with the aim of addressing the dire social and environmental issues that currently plague society. Through this project, Sustainable Development and Green Economy will be pushed to the forefront of entrepreneurial and societal life in Egypt.
The Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (FPM) was founded in 2003 as a practical, non-profit instrument subsidiary to the Politecnico di Milano (the Technical University of Milan) in the fields of innovation and technology transfer. It aims to promote applied research, education, and dissemination of scientific culture; share innovation with businesses and public administrations; and foster the creation of new enterprises. Research activity is focused on business, economics, management, and great attention is devoted to the analysis of the impact of new technologies and technology based entrepreneurship. One section of FPM, the Enterprise Accelerator, supports technological transfers from the university to the industrial world through the creation of new enterprises by offering services to potential entrepreneurs in the start-up phase through:
- The Incubator: to assist high-tech start-up enterprises
- The New Enterprises Office: to stimulate the creation and development of new enterprises
FPM contributes to the design of the syllabus of the multidisciplinary modules including entrepreneurial competences and skills. FPM can leverage its previous experience on the development of entrepreneurial curricula and its activity in support of the creation of university start-ups and spin-offs through the Acceleratore di Impresa of the Politecnico di Milano.
FPM involves relevant stakeholders, such as municipalities and public bodies active in the domain of smart cities and organises workshops and site visits to start-ups working in the area of green technologies.
FPM contributes to the implementation of Module III, specifically through the provision of case studies where, through the analysis of real cases, the trainees will have the chance to develop competences. FPM also contributes to the development of course material based on company case studies. FPM leads the quality control work package (WP8), including all of its activities and reports.
RWTH Aachen is the largest university of technology in Germany and one of the most renowned technical universities in Europe. The RWTH was founded as a Polytechnikum in 1870. Teaching and research are characterised by an international, innovative, and interdisciplinary approach. RWTH Aachen has a long history of close and wide-ranging co-operation with national and international industries and research centres. The department of Engineering Hydrology has wide experience in Sustainable Water Management (SWM). The department has a section entitled “UNESCO Chair for Water Management and Climate Change”. The chair’s main role is to promote SWM in the Middle East. The Chair will play a significant role in developing GIEP. The department is also leading the eLearning group of the RWTH since 2004. The eLearning AG is a group of eLearning experts from all the university departments. This eLearning AG will play an important role in developing the Learning Management System.
RWTH Aachen also leads the implementation of work package 4 (Developing the Learning Management System). Aachen develops all water related activities and courses in WP1. It develops and provides training on eLearning and blended learning techniques. RWTH is also responsible for providing training module in Germany on “Global Changes and Sustainable Development”. This includes preparation and adoption of training materials to cope with local Egyptian circumstances. The courses cover topics such as “global water reality” and “water and green economy”. At an early stage of the project, RWTH Aachen develops the web-based communication server to use it for uploading/downloading the necessary materials for the project. It also supports the grant applicant in managing the project and provides the necessary advice based on wide experience in implementing TEMPUS projects, mainly in Egypt and the MEDA region.
Established in 1863, POLIMI is one of the leading science and technology universities in Europe and is the largest institute in Italy in Engineering, Architecture, and Industrial Design. Its premises are spread over 7 campuses for better interaction with local communities and private companies. The university offers innovative programmes at all levels with 6 schools of engineering, 2 schools of architecture, and 1 school of design. Teaching is deeply related to research, a key commitment that enables POLIMI to achieve results of high international standards, while creating connections with the business world. With more than 130 laboratories, strategic research is carried out in the fields of energy, transportation, management and planning, design, mathematics, natural sciences, ICT, built environment, and cultural heritage. POLIMI has extensive experience in managing international projects of great size and is very committed to international cooperation projects.
POLIMI coordinates and manages the project. The management task includes leading 3 task groups and responsibility for all 9 task groups. POLIMI is responsible for leading the first work package which is aimed at developing a joint/double MSc degree. It also supports the consortium in developing curriculum, syllabus, and course content. POLIMI leads the training work package and provides two training modules in Italy. This includes preparation and adoption of training materials to cope with local Egyptian circumstances. The training modules cover topics such as “Green Entrepreneurship, Management of small business, and Sustainable cities and their policies”. POLIMI is also responsible for the overall financial administration of the project budget. As a grant applicant, POLIMI prepares the final version of the intermediate and final project reports and submits them to the EACEA. POLIMI ensures the involvement of external evaluators to ensure quality.
The Graz University of Technology pursues high quality teaching and research in the fields of engineering and technical-natural sciences. An integral part of putting together such excellent education and training programs is knowing the needs of society and the economy. Ultimately, the quality of education and training at TU Graz is carried forward by the strength of its knowledge-oriented and applied research approaches. Numerous competence centres such as the Christian-Doppler laboratories, special research fields, research focuses, and large EU projects are only a few examples of the University’s extremely active and successful work. In world-wide competition with comparable institutions, TU Graz aspires to become the preeminent teaching and research centre in the fields of engineering and technical-natural sciences.
TU Graz plays a central role in this consortium by injecting the ideas of innovation into the planned MSc programme. TU Graz supports the process of developing the GIEP curriculum, syllabus, and course contents. In addition, TU Graz is responsible for the second training module on Green Innovation. TU Graz also introduces the Egyptian academic members to the techniques of innovation in Austria and trains them on systematic innovation, approaching industry, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. TU Graz involves its Technology Transfer Office in the training process in order to help the Egyptian professors acquire knowledge regarding the role of the university in promoting, enabling, and supporting start-up businesses. Various entrepreneurs are involved to provide their experience to the Egyptians.
In 1938, the nucleus of the Alexandria University had its beginning in the form of two satellite faculties of Fouad the First University. One of the main concerns of Alexandria University is the development of highly employable graduates who will be able to positively contribute to the economic, social, and cultural life of the wider community and have the capacity for, and commitment to, continued personal and professional development. Alexandria University is focused on undertaking dynamic and sustainable regional engagements in recognition of the rapidly changing global environment and being committed to excellence in education, research, and leadership development. This was one of the main reasons for the university vice-president to fully support the preparation of this proposal. Alexandria University, with 175,000 undergraduate students and 19,000 graduate students, is considered the second biggest university in Egypt and the Middle East.
Having the university’s top management involved in the project provides a great opportunity for achieving the project goals, particularly for developing a multi-disciplinary degree in which several faculties are involved. It is noteworthy that the strategic plan of Alexandria University for its new campus is to focus on multi-disciplinary degrees and research activities. Dr Khaled el Saadany of the University of Alexandria has considerable experience in Environmental Education and has contributed to several workshops for education for sustainable development. He has produced sustainable agriculture related books and courses with innovative ideas and content on dry-lands, climate change, remote sensing, and water quality. Alexandria University participates in the preparation of the GIEP and offers its courses, and collaborates with POLIMI in the implementation of the training programme. In addition, Alexandria University will play a central role in the dissemination work package.
In accordance with Presidential Decree No. 18, Zagazig University (ZU) was founded in 1974 as a state university with the aim to create and transfer knowledge in a manner that would produce citizens who contribute positively to their communities and lead their professions in a global society. The mission of ZU is the advancement of applied knowledge and research to address societal needs, and the provision of programmes of study that provide a balance between theory and application. ZU also prepares students for careers in professional fields. This mission, in line with the project, seeks to target innovation and transfer the theories and knowledge developed from within the campus to be made available for Egyptian society. The involvement of the faculties of science, business, and engineering in this project is very important in order to achieve the project objectives, especially given that ZU has a strong relationship with the private sector and is in a position to introduce real change.
ZU has already agreed with the Sharqeyya Governorate Industry Sector, prior to preparation of this proposal, to work with the Chamber of Commerce to contribute to the development of practically oriented courses and make use of their experts. The involvement of several faculties will be of great support to the development of multidisciplinary teaching materials. The university also establishes labs that provide research and development consultancy for the industry in the region and promote sustainable development in what is the third largest governorate in the country. The energy department helps the European partners in developing renewable energy courses to promote sustainable development beyond the campus. ZU also plays an important role in dissemination through the green buildings and water saving campaign, mainly in Sharqeyya governorate (which is the biggest agricultural area in Egypt). ZU also leads the second work package (WP2) to establish green technology labs at the 4 participating universities.
The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded in 1919 as an Egyptian private university. The AUC contributes enormously to the intellectual growth, discipline, and character of the future leaders of Egypt and the region. It has approximately 7,000 students, with 1,000 students at the master’s degree level. The mission of the AUC is to provide high quality educational opportunities to students from all segments of Egyptian society as well as from other countries. The university offers programmes at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels as well as an extensive continuing education program. The pursuit of excellence is central to AUC’s mission, and the university maintains high standards of academic achievement, professional behaviour, and ethical conduct. The university has already started several sustainability initiatives and outreach events to promote it among the Egyptian community. The great infrastructure of the AUC and quality of its staff ensures nothing but success to this project.
The AUC plays a central role and supports the consortium in implementing the objectives of the project in Egypt. It participates in the development of the GIEP and its courses. In addition, the AUC is establishing a lab for green technologies which includes desalination units, water models, a renewable energy model, demonstrations for green building components, and so forth. In addition, the AUC is the leader of the fifth work package of the project which is devoted to ensuring the sustainability and quality of the developed degree through achieving Egyptian and European accreditation. The AUC also actively participates in the marketing campaign of the GIEP. The AUC works toward the signing of cooperation agreements to offer a complementary dual degree that is flexible for long term student mobility from both sides. An agreement between all the involved universities will produce a long-term innovative cooperation model.
The Ministry of Higher Education was established on November 9th, 1961 to assume the responsibilities of higher education. Education expanded considerably with respect to universities, which began to spread into different regions, in addition to state and private higher institutes and intermediate institutes. The Ministry is assigned a number of important responsibilities, namely: proposing higher education policy; setting the plans, projects, and programs necessary to implement this policy; setting the means that lead to increased university and higher education in light of the current and future needs of the country; and developing the means that lead to a strengthening of the relationship between universities, colleges, and higher institutes on the one hand, and the environment on the other. This is all done with the aim to provide the best public service to society, as well as supervising the Egyptian cultural bureaus and centres overseas. The Ministry also supervises the Academy of the Arabic Language and the National Committee of UNESCO.
Since the ministry was the responsible body for realising the nationwide innovation strategy and devoted a large portion of its resources to promoting and funding relevant research and education activities in Egypt, it was necessary to secure its involvement in this project. The Ministry agreed to participate in this proposal and establish the first multidisciplinary degree to be offered at the university level, with the involvement of more than one faculty in offering the MSc. The Ministry plays a significant role in quality control and monitoring activities. It is also vital for the accreditation of the planned MSc. This involvement ensures the successful implementation of the project. The involvement of the Ministry in this proposal was a great indication for the consortium members of the validity of the planned initiative. The Ministry’s involvement also ensures the project’s institutional and financial sustainability.
SEKEM is an Egyptian NGO involved in all levels of education, research, and development. SEKEM runs a kindergarten, primary, preparatory, and secondary schools as well as a technical secondary school and a vocational training centre based on the dual company and school based vocational training approach. SEKEM also helped found the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development. SEKEM has been awarded many international awards including the Alternative Nobel Prize for its more than 30 years of sustainable development and social entrepreneurship. The RCE Cairo (Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) is part of the SEKEM entity. RCE Cairo was acknowledged in November 2008 by the United Nations University in Tokyo. It is now part of a global network of currently 117 RCEs, all established within the framework of the UN Decade for Education on Sustainable Development (2005-2014). RCE Cairo, with its strong local network of over 20 universities, schools, NGOs, companies, and governmental authorities, is highly committed to its aims of promoting education for sustainable development nationwide.
SEKEM supports the grant applicant in the local coordination of different activities. SEKEM has wide experience in working with the industry and has its own companies which deal only with green industry and products. This enables the consortium to bridge the gap between Egyptian universities and the industrial sector. SEKEM supports carrying out the Market Needs Analysis to identify the exact needs of the industry and Egyptian market for the proposed programme. This will also help the consortium to identify the topics that have to be covered by the GIEP courses. It is also responsible for the dissemination package together with the four Egyptian universities (Work Package 6). The tasks of SEKEM in WP6 include the preparation of a plan for the different dissemination channels and target groups. It will also support the four Egyptian universities to organise the dissemination events in Alexandria, Cairo, Zagazig, and Qena. SEKEM also helps in involving donors to provide scholarships for the students.
Soil and More Egypt (SME) is a joint venture company that carries out research on soil, organic matter, and the hydro-physical properties of soil. It provides technical consultation in the fields of environment, water, and energy. SME’s main activities are in the fields of composting, foot-printing, and emission reduction. It generates carbon credits by applying innovative techniques of composting which avoid methane emissions and thus have a lower impact on the environment.
Since 2008 SME has developed methodologies to generate carbon credits for carbon sequestration, avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers, and energy saving through sustainable practices in agriculture. It provides project management of CDM projects to decrease carbon emissions and carbon assessment projects. Comprehensive carbon assessments are conducted for products, companies, and events. The company’s corporate objective is to create commercial value through ecological and ethical innovation.
SME represents the “green industry” sector in this project. The involvement of SME enormously supports the consortium in understanding the real needs of the green industry and business. SME was established by an entrepreneur whose experiences are documented and provided to the students as a success story for a start-up business. SME also contributes to the first work package to support the development of the programme and ensuring it accurately presents the real-world needs of the Egyptian market.
SME also supports the dissemination of the MSc program among the industrial partners in Egypt. In addition, SME is instrumental in encouraging donors to provide financial support to ensure the sustainability of the whole initiative and possibly also provide scholarships for the students.
